the angst
by Jan Maher, 2024

Česká verze zdeThe Angst explores the relationship between public spaces, people, and the alteration of their behavior in these environments. It examines concepts such as anxiety, derealization, naturalness, and social phobia.

The project researches these concepts from the perspective of someone affected by them. The aim is to bring the viewer closer to the situations in which these people often get caught in.

In public spaces with high concentrations of people, human nature is often altered—these places become a kind of "mental battleground." Here, the only goal is to return to one’s comfort zone, where they are not threatened by the opinions or gazes of others.

During these journeys, individuals happen to register only a small fraction of their surrounding. In some way they are creating a new, altered view of the world. The work captures these journeys and, through collapsing visuals, presents the environment and occurrence’s encountered from the perspective of the affected individual.
